The top 100 safest cities in the world 2021 is a list that ranks the safest cities in the world. 5 of these cities are located in America, and 2 are from Europe.
The Economist Intelligence Unit released its annual list of the world’s safest cities, a rating of 60 worldwide locations based on digital security, health security, infrastructure, personal security, and, for the first time this year, environmental security.
Normally, Asian cities such as Tokyo, Singapore, and Osaka are at the top of the list, however the top of the list has shifted after a worldwide pandemic and ratings for a city’s environmental security were included.
What’s Hot Right Now
This year, Copenhagen earns the top position as the safest city in the world. The city of Toronto isn’t far behind. Copenhagen received 82.4 points out of a possible 100. The city of Toronto got 82.2.
“One important element that contributes to Copenhagen’s safety is its low crime rate, which is now at its lowest in more than a decade,” says Lars Weiss, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, in the study.
One of the reasons for Copenhagen’s safety, according to Weiss, is the city’s small income difference.
“Copenhagen also has a high level of social cohesiveness and a small income disparity,” she said. “It’s a diverse city where the cleaning lady and the CEO run into one other at the store and their children attend the same school. This is one of the most fundamental aspects of Danish culture, and it significantly contributes to the high levels of trust and safety that we enjoy.”
“Copenhagen is clearly a deserved overall leader, and Toronto is a well-deserving runner-up,” the report’s authors write, “but as much because of long-term achievement in keeping people safe as from any specific advances in the past two years.”

The United States did not make the top ten, although New York City was tied for 11th place with Barcelona. Washington, D.C. was ranked 14th, while San Francisco and London were ranked 15th.
Nigeria’s Lagos, Egypt’s Cairo, Venezuela’s Caracas, Pakistan’s Karachi, and Myanmar’s Yangon were at the bottom of the list.
