Caribbean Port Welcomes Six Cruise Ships for the First Time in 20 Months

A historic day was in store for the Port of Maiquetía, when six cruise ships arrived on Wednesday morning. The port had been closed since December 2016 due to a strike by workers protesting over wage cuts and deteriorating working conditions – they reopened last month after union members accepted an offer from ship owners.

The renowned Caribbean cruise port of Philipsburg St. Maarten is welcoming six cruise ships from four different cruise lines for the first time in 20 months, indicating that cruising is making a return. This announcement comes as cruise traffic to Jamaica grows, and St. Kitts welcomes its second group of ships in almost two years.

Since cruise ships resumed service in the summer, St. Maarten has become one of the busiest cruise destinations. The port welcomed six cruise ships on November 24, the biggest day in over 20 months. The ships brought almost 7,500 passengers and staff to the island, which is good news for local businesses.

“On Wednesday, we are delighted to greet our visitors and workers with a warm St. Maarten greeting. We can now accommodate six boats at our ports after 20 months. “This is a really good indicator of where we’re going.” On Tuesday, Minister of Tourism and Economic Affairs Hon. Roger Lawrence said, “To restore and preserve our standing as a top destination, we must continue to engage with our partners and give service excellence.”

Sky Princess, managed by Princess Cruises, AIDAluna, and AIDAdiva ships operated by German-based AIDA Cruises, and Marella Discovery operated by British-based Marella Cruises were among the ships at St. Maarten on November 24.

Explorer of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas, both Royal Caribbean cruise ships, were also there. At the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facility, all of the ships were moored between the two cruise docks. Two cargo ships have also docked on the island, bringing the total number of ships to eight.

“For the destination, this is another another watershed moment. For the first time in more than 20 months, the top destination in the Northeastern Caribbean will welcome six cruise ships in one day. On Tuesday, Port St. Maarten Group Chief Executive Officer Alexander Gumbs remarked, “This symbolizes our perseverance and hard work by our personnel and stakeholders throughout the year in preparation for the resumption of cruising.”

When the Celebrity Millennium resumed service on June 5, 2021, St. Maarten became not only the first Caribbean island to welcome back cruises, but also the first nation in North America. The ship launched her maiden seven-day cruise from the port, stopping at Aruba, Curaçao, and Barbados. The Celebrity Millennium then sailed from St. Maarten until August 2021.

In the next days, other cruise ships will arrive at the Caribbean port, including the Oasis of the Seas, which will make a special Thanksgiving visit on November 25, 2021.
